Condolences

Condolence From: Arnold Midgley
Condolence: Though I had known Ed for some years through skiing, I really got to know him when we lived in the same landlady’s house in Kingston for two years while we were studying Engineering at Queen’s. My Mother made treats which I brought back to Kingston after a weekend in Ottawa. She made alternate batches of date squares and chocolate chip cookies. Fortunately Ed did not like date squares, so that batch lasted nearly the whole week.

We had a good time on the weekends as we were both on the Queen’s ski team, which meant we drove to Ottawa most weekends to practice at Camp Fortune. Fortunately, Ed was not colour blind, as he was one of our best cross country skiers. Another cross country racer on the team was colour blind, and got lost in the race sometimes, as the course was marked by different coloured bunting on the tree branches, with the different colours indicating this week’s race, even marking more than one race per weekend. Our racer saw all grey bunting and had to guess which was the right trail to follow.

In summers in Ottawa, we were fortunate to be able to share time with Ed and John at the family cottage at Rocky Point on the Ottawa River. Both sailing and water skiing were enjoyed on many occasions. Summer was also the time when Ed had a great attraction to go to the Town of Mount Royal, where he was attracted to the Yale house where Jean lived. It’s hard to remember how simple it was to get around, when Decarie was a two lane surface road, before the interchanges and the elevated road were built, and Decarie was sunk into the ground.

I was fortunate to have Ed as my Best Man when we got married in 1965 on a hot July day, like many we had this year. We felt elegant in our white dinner jackets, and the girls all in great dresses.

As we lived and worked in different cities, our paths crossed less frequently during our working lives, but we enjoyed those occasions when we did meet. Caroline and I were pleased to visit Ed and Jean in Montreal in early career, and to visit them in the old cabin in the Bancroft property, and later in the new house constructed further back from the lake. We saw a series of trailers come and go over the years, and a few different summer destinations, and Ed regaled us with the features of the latest tow vehicle for the trailer, especially when he got into the light weight trailers.

We appreciate the long standing connection with the Hanna family, growing up with Ed, Isobel, Marjorie, John and Cathy in the ski crowd at Camp Fortune with continuing connections over the years, in spite of the distances between us.

We are sorry that we have lost Ed now, but glad that he is now free from pain and limitations. You have earned your rest Ed, and we know we will meet again in time. A Dieu, good friend.

Condolence: Jim my heart goes out to you and your family at this very difficult and painful time. May the fond memories you shared bring you comfort and peace. When the tears have dried and the goodbyes said, these are what will keep your dad alive in your hearts and minds and allow him to live on through you.

I'll Live On

Don't cry for me in sadness; don't weep for me in sorrow,
For I will be beside you, as sure as comes tomorrow.
My body has gone but my spirit lives on, as does my love for you.
Just as in life. I'll watch over you, I always will be true.
My blood lives on in my children, how I've watched them grow up with pride.
I'll live on within them, always by their side.
I know my jokes weren't always funny and jobs weren't always done.
Just try and always remember the good times, the days when we had fun.
Reach out if you need me, for I will always be near.
Just talk to me, as if I am there, I promise I will hear.
For I'll live on, with in your mind, we'll never be apart,
As long as you keep my memory, deep within your heart.
So lift up your hearts, don't be sad, my spirit hasn't gone.
While you’re still there, so am I, I really will live on.

Condolence From: Shawndelle Pocha
Condolence: My prayers are for peace and comfort for Jean and the whole family in this time of loss.
May they be comforted in remembering the impact Uncle Ed had on so many people through his kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness and faithfulness. I have fond memories of summer visits to the cottage growing up. Later on, Uncle Ed, Jean and I got to enjoy fellowship and laughter connecting here in the Kootenays during their RV travels. Ed and Jean were generous supporters of me in prayer and finances when I went on a missions trip in 2010, and Ed spoke blessing and encouragement over Kerry and I at our Ottawa wedding reception in 2011. I thank God that Ed is now in the presence of Jesus, hearing him say, well done, good and faithful servant.
With love, Shawndelle
