Obituary for Ewart Ray Wannamaker

WANNAMAKER, EWART RAY - Passed away in his 97th year on May 2, 2019, Dear son of the late Allan R. Wannamaker and Mary E. (Aide), beloved husband of Katie Agnes (Harvey) of 71 years who died in April, 2014. Ewart was the devoted father of four children; Connie (Lorne), L'Amable, Barbara (Roy), Peterborough, Ron (Elaine), Boulter and Gail (Dave), Bancroft. He was a very special grandfather to 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.



Ewart was the 9th child in a family of thirteen and was predeceased by brothers, Guy, Bert, Lloyd and Arnold and sisters, Myrtle Malloy, Violet Cairns, Vera Connors, Shirley Towes and Goldie Towes. He is survived by brothers, Leo and Orval and a sister, Beulah Towns.



Ewart and Katie were married on June 26, 1943. He enlisted in the army in 1942, trained in Peterborough and was shipped overseas in 1944. After his military discharge Ewart moved his family to Bancroft, where they operated a shoe and general store, on Hastings Street until their retirement in 1976. He also worked as a driver examiner for many years and Katie was the first agent in town for the Unemployment Insurance Commission.



Ewart was very involved in local politics and enjoyed holding the positions of Deputy Reeve and a Town councilor for a term. Both he and Katie were life members of the local branch of RCL Branch 181 in Bancroft and held many positions over long years of service. He was thrilled to receive a most prestigious award in 2015. He became a Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honour of France. He received his medal and certificate from Lieutenant Colonel, Roger Vandomme, Deputy Defence Attache, of the French Embassy.



They enjoyed many years of traveling around the world and spending many wonderful family times together.



Visitation will be held at the Bancroft Bible Chapel on Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 2 to 4:00 pm. The Funeral will be held at the Bancroft Bible Chapel, Monday, May 6, 2019 at 11:00 am. Reception will follow at the Legion Hall.



In memory of Ewart, donations to the RCL Branch 181 Poppy Fund or Hastings Centennial Manor (Special Program Services) would be appreciated by the family.
